You must have seen or heard about the greatest and biggest festival of Durga Puja in Kolkata.
But have you ever wondered how the idols of Goddess Durga made during the Durga Puja festival in Kolkata? It's actually possible to see the idols being handcrafted.
Where can you see it being made?
It’s Kumartuli in north Kolkata. Kumartuli means Potter’s Town (Kumar = potter. Tuli = locality).
Around 300 something years old Kumortuli was home to a number of renowned persons.
What is interesting is to note that the idols are made out of environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo and clay. The potters of Kumortuli, fashioned the clay from the river beside their home.

How to Get There: You can get there by Bus or metros. Nearest metro station is Sovabazar. Or else you can also take a taxi/cab till Kumartuli.
Best time to visit: The best time to visit Kumartuli is during June-August. Traditionally, the eyes of the Goddess are drawn on (in an auspicious ritual called Chokkhu Daan) on Mahalaya -- around a week before Durga Puja starts which is worth seeing.
